Vitamin K2 in Pakistan: Why It Matters With D3 & Calcium (and How to Choose)

by MediGreen Team 27 Sep 2026

Most people have heard of vitamin D and calcium for bones, but fewer know about vitamin K2. It's often called the "missing piece" of a bone-health routine.

This guide explains what K2 is, why it's paired with D3 and calcium, and how to choose the right MediGreen option.

What Is Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K is a family of fat-soluble vitamins. The two main forms are:

  • Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone): found mainly in leafy green vegetables like spinach, saag and methi.
  • Vitamin K2 (menaquinones): found in smaller amounts in fermented foods, cheese, egg yolks and some meats.

Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal blood clotting.

Typical Pakistani diets contain very few of the foods rich in K2, which is one reason people add it as a supplement.

A Fat-Soluble Vitamin

As a fat-soluble vitamin, K2 is absorbed best with dietary fat and can be stored in the body. That is why it is usually taken with a meal.

K2 and Gut Bacteria

Some bacteria, including certain gut bacteria, can make small amounts of vitamin K2. However, it is not clear how much of this is absorbed, so food and supplements remain the main sources.

How Vitamin K2 Works in the Body

Vitamin K activates special proteins that need it to work properly.

Blood Coagulation

In the liver, vitamin K activates clotting factors. This is its best-known role in blood coagulation, and it is mainly linked with vitamin K1.

Bone Metabolism and Calcium Metabolism

In bone, vitamin K activates a protein called osteocalcin, which helps bind calcium into the bone matrix. This process, called bone mineralization, is a key part of normal bone metabolism.

Vitamin K also activates matrix Gla protein, which is found in blood vessel walls and other soft tissues. Matrix Gla protein is thought to help prevent calcium deposits where they are not wanted. Together, these proteins show how vitamin K takes part in calcium metabolism.

Vitamin K2 and Bone Health

Some studies suggest vitamin K2 may help support bone mineral density, especially in older women. Results vary between studies, and K2 works best alongside enough calcium, vitamin D, protein and weight-bearing exercise.

Healthy bones and teeth both depend on calcium being laid down properly, which is why K2 is often mentioned for dental health as well.

Vitamin K2 and Heart Health

Researchers are interested in K2 and heart health because of its role in activating matrix Gla protein in blood vessel walls. Some observational studies linked higher K2 intake with fewer calcium deposits in arteries.

These findings are early and do not prove cause and effect. K2 is not a treatment for heart disease, and anyone with heart health concerns should follow their doctor's advice.

Vitamin K Deficiency: Who Is at Risk?

True vitamin K deficiency is rare in healthy adults. It is more likely in newborn babies, people with conditions that reduce fat absorption, and those on long-term antibiotics.

Signs of vitamin K deficiency include easy bruising and bleeding. If you notice these, see a doctor rather than self-treating.

Why Take K2 With Vitamin D3 and Calcium?

Each nutrient has its own job in a bone-health routine:

  • Calcium is needed to maintain normal bones.
  • Vitamin D3 contributes to normal absorption of calcium.
  • Vitamin K2 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.

That's why many people who take high-strength vitamin D3 add K2 alongside it. If you're choosing a D3 strength, read our vitamin D3 strength guide.

Standalone K2 or a Combination Formula?

Vitamin K2 supplements come in several forms. Choose based on what you already take.

Option Best for MediGreen product
K2 only You already take D3 or calcium separately and just want to add K2 K2 PRO 200mcg
D3 + K2 One tablet for both vitamins Chorol D3 + K2, Chorol 60s, D3 + K2 Pack of 2
Calcium + D3 + K2 (+ minerals) A complete bone formula in one Kalzium, MECIUM (with B12), KALFAX D

Why K2 PRO Is Different

Most K2 in Pakistan comes mixed with D3 or calcium. K2 PRO 200mcg is a pure, single-ingredient vitamin K2, and in Pakistan it's made only by MediGreen.

That makes it easy to add to what you already take without doubling up on vitamin D or calcium.

Important Safety Note: Blood Thinners

Because vitamin K plays a role in blood clotting, anyone taking blood-thinning medication such as warfarin must speak to their doctor before taking any vitamin K supplement, including K2 or D3 + K2 combinations.

Vitamin K can change how these medicines work.

Tips for Taking Vitamin K2

  • Take it with a meal that contains some fat. K2 is fat-soluble.
  • Check your other dietary supplements. Many calcium and D3 products already contain K2.
  • Be consistent and take it daily at the dose on the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take vitamin K2 every day?

Yes, vitamin K2 supplements are designed for daily use at the dose on the pack, unless you take blood thinners (see above).

Should I take D3 and K2 together?

Many people do, because the two support bone health in complementary ways. You can take them separately (for example MG Ultra D + K2 PRO) or in one tablet (for example Chorol D3 + K2).

Can I get enough K2 from food?

K2-rich fermented foods like natto and aged cheeses are uncommon in everyday Pakistani meals, so many people's intake is low. Leafy greens provide mostly K1.

Does K2 help bone metabolism?

Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones by activating proteins involved in bone metabolism.
